Avalanche training level 1 - what do you learn? A group of our Fernie guests took the Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 course and it was a real eye opener. We've all taken a look at an imaculate bowl of untracked powder before and most of us will have to admit that we've made the decision to jump in and have a run without knowing the real risks! Spending a few days with an experienced mountain guide gives you the shock needed to make decisions based on knowledge and be a bit more careful!
The course gives you a great foundation for understanding avalanches, their triggers, how to avoid them, conduct search and rescues and provides the basics that you need in order to start some backcountry touring. Kicking off with some classroom time followed by a day in the backcountry learning some practical skills and avalanche awareness with further classroom time on the evening and finishes with another day in the backcountry. Following an evening in the classroom, we spent our first day in the field at Island Lake Lodge where we had a mixture of trekking in snowshoes, riding gladed tree runs and observing our surroundings to get to grips with basic avalanche awareness. A beacon search rounded off the day to help the group get a feel for a search scenario. Day two saw a trek into Lost Boys out the back of Fernie Alpine Resort for a mixture of riding, snow-shoeing and diggings snow pits to assess the snowpack. If you'd like to take part in one of these worthwhile courses just let us know at the time of booking and we can arrange it for you.
